Need a great date night spot??? Wesley and I don’t get out very much. We thoroughly enjoy being in the comfort of our home and since Lincoln has an extremely regimented bed time of 7:30 pm it is very difficult to ever do a date night. Whenever we do get out it’s almost always out of Lakeway and at least a 30 minute drive home plus we have my mom come and watch Lincoln and it’s typically a late night for her as well. This past weekend I planned a date night in Lakeway for the first time since moving here. We hired out first true babysitter (my best friend’s 13 year old daughter who also lives in Lakeway), but made sure to have her come over after Lincoln went to bed. We thought that would be the easiest transition to babysitting for the first time…probably for us more than her.

I planned a dinner at Iron Cactus at the Hill Country Galleria and thought we could grab some drinks somewhere in Lakeway afterwards. Wesley and I have been to the Iron Cactus many times, but almost always with Lincoln in tow who doesn’t make for a very enjoyable meal these days although Iron Cactus has ALWAYS been accommodating when we have him. We got to Iron Cactus around 8 pm and I was thrilled that there wasn’t much of a wait. Typically when we go it’s always packed and difficult to get a seat, BUT I learned that they DO take reservations! So in the summer when I’ve found it’s busier I will definitely take advantage of their reservation option.

We are currently in the midst of a plant based diet aka vegan, but I wanted us to have a cheat meal since we were on a date! We started with drinks, of course! I mean what kind of date night would it be if we weren’t lushes?!?! I had a Mexican martini and Wesley ordered a margarita…. Both were so fantastic we ordered two! For food, we ordered the tuna ceviche to start and of course they brought out their devilish complementary chips and salsa. We gorged ourselves on both and probably could’ve left satisfied at that point, but we didn’t. Wesley ordered pork tacos and I ordered the chicken enchiladas. Oh my gosh, totally heaven in my mouth and a meat orgy! After not having meat in a couple of weeks it was truly meat overload, but worth every bite! We ended our delicious meal with dessert… we got the Mexican donuts. I can’t stress enough how absolutely amazing these little Mexican cream cheese filled donuts were!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were AH-MAY-ZEEENG! Seriously.

I think the best part about having our date at Iron Cactus was that we were close to home, had great drinks (so great we opted to stay there and have more and forego going anywhere else), and wonderful food! So I totally get it… not everyone lives in Lakeway, BUT there’s an Iron Cactus downtown if you’re looking to go out on the town afterwards and an Iron Cactus more North on Stonelake close to Braker and Mopac.

We had such a great time at Iron Cactus and enjoyed doing something in our neck of the woods for a change and making it a low key date night. We wrapped up the night cuddled up on the couch watching a movie… after Wesley took the babysitter home, of course. So surreal… taking the babysitter home… I’m still surprised sometimes that I’m a mom with a husband and a 13 year old babysitter.

  1. Are you doing the vegan diet temporarily or is this like a fast? I’m thinking of going vegan for 30 days…I hear it’s hard to go back to meat. You should blog your experience

    • I’m trying to make the vegan diet a lifestyle change, but it has been very difficult to be 100%. We still have a house full of non-vegan items that I hate to have go to waste and until Whole Foods opens in our area in April, it’s near impossible to find the vegan things we need to be 100%. My husband still wants to eat meat like fish and chicken, but I’m okay with saying goodbye to meat forever. What’s difficult is DAIRY… I love cheese, sour cream, etc so leaving those behind has proven to be difficult. My husband is wearing pants that he’s never been able to fit into within just a few weeks so we definitely see a difference. I might just have to take your advice and blog about it 🙂
