A month or so ago I told you all about making my own dishwasher detergent so today seems appropriate to do a Worth It Wednesday on the concoction that I raved about in this blog.

Over the last month of using my own detergent I have noticed a white film building up on all of my dishes. I read online that this might happen if we have hard water, which we do…… see for yourself :/

Also, the detergent has started to harden… again, something I read online could happen due to the citric acid… again, see for yourself…

I’m holding my container upside down and you can see how it’s all stuck at the bottom…literally not moving!

So over the past week I’ve been soaking all of my dishes in a combination of water and vinegar to remove the white filmy build up, which has worked perfectly. After all my above whining, moaning, and groaning one might expect me to say I’m off to HEB for some expensive detergent tablets, but I still don’t plan on buying store bought detergent!!! However, I am going to tweak my original recipe and see how the next batch goes. I’m also going to start using the white distilled vinegar in my rinse section of the dishwasher to hopefully alleviate the white filmy build up created by my hard water. Stay tuned…

So I’m on the fence—Homemade Dishwasher Detergent #1 was a fail—but I’m going to make a second batch and give it another round so is homemade detergent worth it??? I still say “hell yeah”!!!

  1. It’s actually super easy to make and if we didn’t have hard water the white film wouldn’t have been an issue. I just got more vinegar at the store and a new citic acid tonight. I think it’s going to do the trick 🙂

  2. My parents have hard water in San Antonio and my mom always puts 1/4 cup of vinegar in the washer with the dishes – keeps the white film away!
