Nothing can change your mood like a great song, right? Well, lately the Barry clan has been jamming out to Yo Gabba Gabba’s Season 3 CD.

It makes me want to pull my hair and eat glass, but we listen to it because it makes my daughter happy and that’s essential while driving to and from school on a daily basis. This week Caroline surprised me when Track 7 came on and she started singing along, “Don’t Bite Your Friends.” GREAT! She likes the song, she knows the words and hopefully the next step is that she’ll learn the lesson.

This weekend, we were in my husband’s Jeep while cruising around Austin and per the usual, we were listening to a pop station–whatever station Bobby Bones is on–and my favorite song came on “We Are Young” by F.U.N! Love that song…it makes me want to do fist pumps in the air and get my imaginary lighter out and sway from side to side. I was encouraging Caroline to sing along and she was trying. BUTTTTT as I was mentally swaying from side to side singing about setting the world on fire, I started to listen to the lyrics and started to think about what this fun little anthem is teaching my daugher. I came to the conclusion that it’s not teaching her anything…yet…but in a few years, she’ll be singing along with me and then I started to frown.

THIS GENERATION OF MUSIC IS AWFUL. I mean it’s awesome if you’re a 20something plus adult but for a growing mind…it’s AWFUL!

Here are some lyrics from three VERY popular songs.

#1 Song-“We are Young” Lyric-Getting higher than the empire state

#6 Song-“Starship” Lyric-We’re higher than a mother effer….

#17 Song-“Young Wild and Free” Lyric-So what we smoke weed, we don’t care who sees

So, those are just three that I thought to look up. AND I’ll be the first to admit that I am not saint…I drink and say swear words, but there is something so frustrating as a mother to know that these artists are poisoning my baby’s mind.

My husband and I just got into a little bitty tiff about this and he said, “Music has always been inappropriate” and my argument was that when I was younger, the #1 song said, “Mmmm bop ba dopa du wop shoobie dop pop”….how the heck was that poisonous? It wasn’t! When did it become okay to talk about obscene and illegal things during prime time?

What’s the solution?  Please don’t say listening to Barney for the rest of my life…

  1. I with Matt on this one! We watched the “top 100 of the 90’s this week.”. In the mix was “I touch myself” and “semi-charmed life” and not to mention “I like big butts!”. The list goes on and on! I think most adult llove the beats of songs. Children on the other hand are very influential and should probably not view the videos of these not-so-moral songs! Just my opinion.

  2. You could try contemporary Christian music. Some of it is really good, some not so good. The lyrics and radio stations are all family friendly.
