As I write this, I’m sitting one of Austin’s newest mommy-owned businesses, Plug & Play, and I’m loving every minute of it.  Plug & Play is a coworking business for moms, parents rather, because it combines the coworking environment with preschooling.

So, what does that mean exactly?  This means that people who have flexible jobs – whether that’s telecommuting, job sharing, freelancing or working for a corporation that allows work-from-home – can get out of the house and join a welcoming community of fellow workers. Basically, it’s an office but everyone works for a different company.{Taken from Plug&Play’s web site}

What really sets them apart from any other coworking facility is the Childcare Center that’s onsite!

So, yes, it’s a great concept and it’s owned by an Austin mom (which makes is exponentially cooler) but my favorite thing about this place is how BEAUTIFUL it is on the inside and what a productive work environment it provides. I’m lucky to have a job where I can work from home if need be, but I can’t tell you how tired I am of sitting on my couch working and taking breaks to do laundry. No, we don’t have an office.

Lucky me! I’m working from the pretty round table in the middle today!

So, this is how it works.  You wake up, get dressed (or stay in your sweats,) pack up the little one and head over to Plug&Play. Oh yea, skip Starbucks because they have a full coffee/tea bar!  When you arrive, you’ll check in, drop your kiddies off at the preschool and then head to the other side of the building to work in peace. They have music playing softly in the background and several work space options to choose from based on your comfort level. I like tables because I have to spread all my crap out, but some people prefer work-bar areas and others are working from comfy couches with lap desks.  They’ve got it all.  They also have USBs that connect you to printers and fax machines for your convenience! It’s AWESOME.

So, they have several membership options based on your needs and you can learn about them here. What I can say, based on my limited experience working from Plug&Play, is that being in that in a distraction-free modern work environment where the caffeine is flowing is pretty priceless.

  1. I don’t work from home too often, so I enjoy the one day a week/two weeks at home in my pj’s but when I have a few days at home, I start to go crazy.  I could see how this is the perfect solution!

  2.  Great concept!  I may have to give it a try.  I do wish they had some pricing info on their website, though.  I am a ‘plan ahead’ kind of gal, and since it’s a bit of a hike from where I live, I’d have liked to have seen that.  But…definitely worth giving a shot.
