Do you ever wonder how our parents and grandparents did it? And by “it”, I mean raising kids! It’s crazy how often I am visiting my trusty friend, Google, on a daily basis. Do any of you do the same thing? Whether it’s regarding a funny sounding cough, looking up handy helpers for teaching kids to read, or researching what you should feed your baby for their first solid food, I tend to rely on Google for everything. What did our parents do?!
My latest google search obsession has been researching baby’s first foods. Six years ago, when Hudson was a baby, I read a couple of books and just went for it. I was super excited to start him on food and offered him rice cereal the day he turned 4 months old. I couldn’t wait to start. Other than buying (and reading) the book “Super Baby Food” by Ruth Yaron, I didn’t do much additional research…we just went with it!
This time around, knowing that Finn is my last baby, I am in no hurry for him to grow up. So four months came and went, then five months, and the next thing I knew, his six month birthday was upon us. According to the current recommendation from the World Health Organisation (WHO): no solid foods are introduced to baby for the first 6 months. It was time to introduce food. I pulled out our old copy of “Super Baby Food” and continued my research and found a great website that I felt good about. It’s full of good recipes (for homemade baby food) and gave good recommendations of first foods.
Due to Hudson’s food allergies, we were directed by our allergist to take it VERY slowly (one new food every 5-7 days if no reaction) and to stay away from any of the top allergens.
We started with sweet potatoes, and Finn showed us how ready he was to eat – he gobbled them up! After the waiting period, we offered green beans, which he seemed to like even more than the sweet potatoes. 7 days later we offered apples. And, once again, he loved them. He seemed to have an adverse reaction to bananas and carrots, so we took a break from solids and stuck with nursing to get regulated. We are starting over with sweet potatoes and think that avocado will be the next food on the list.
Another article that I came across in my research discussed “Adventurous First Foods”.
“For example, you can do a Chinese beef stew with soy sauce and ginger, or a Mexican beef stew with chilies.”
Ummm….yeah. We can’t seem to get a grip on bananas and carrots, so I’m fairly sure that Mexican beef stew and chilies is not such a good option for baby’s first food. Is it just me or does that sound crazy to you?? Maybe I’m just too much of a purist or something, I don’t know. It was cracking me up, though, thinking about bringing home a doggie bag (like that would ever happen!?!) from Uchiko and just pureeing it up to make the baby’s dinner…
I guess I’m just not that adventurous.
How about you? What route did you go when introducing solid food to your kiddo? Did you go the old school way of pureeing up simple veggies/fruit? Were you the adventurous kind? Or – did you do baby lead weaning and just hand your baby a burger?
