Hello friends! Welcome to the first official meeting of the AMB book club. It’s like Oprah’s book club…except we pick books that are actually enjoyable and don’t make you want to jump off the nearest roof!

My selection: Divergent by Veronica Roth

DivergentCollageAMB

Book Description:

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Book Review:

If you like Hunger Games or YA, you’ll love Divergent. This book is the first book in a trilogy, and it has the potential {I think} to be better than Hunger Games. I read Divergent in less than 24 hours and stayed up until 4:00 AM on a weeknight {shocking for this early-to-bed mama} because I had to keep reading just.one.more.chapter. I had several friends say they did the same thing. It’s got everything you need to make this mama happy – a fun, easy read with a little lurve story mixed in.

A few fun facts:

Book 2, Insurgent, is already out as well, and Book 3, Allegiant, is set to be released this fall.

The movie has just finished filming and is premiering in May 2014. It has a great cast – Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Mekhi Phifer…and…Theo James. SWOON. For any Downton Abbey fans out there {holla!} this would be Mr. Kemal Pamuk to you.

All-in-all, a great end of summer read!

Any of you mamas read it? What did you think?
