What is your favorite outdoor activity to do with the kids? Today we explore the world of GEOCACHING!

Did you know our world is full of hidden treasure!?  Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Using an app or GPS participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.  The geocache can be a micro, the size of a chap stick container, macro, a large container, or any size in between. Geocaches are hidden by people in just about any location!

Geocaching is a great outdoor family activity. My family and I discovered this about a year ago and our hunt has taken us to many fun locations.  To find treasure (also known as caches), visit the Geocaching website. We use an app on our Andriod cell phone, (C.Geo)  which has details about the cache.  Information about the cache, such as size, terrain, difficulty, when it was hidden and hints can be found through the website or app. There are several other apps available for both iphone and android. Be sure to read the comments from other players, I always like to look at when the cache was last found, so I know it’s an active geocache.

Cache containers usually contain a log, so be sure to bring a pen to sign your name.  Some caches have small trinkets or little toys. If you take a trinket, replace it with an equally cool trinket.  Once you have finished exploring the contents, be sure to put it all back together and replace it in it’s original location.  If you are a first time finder (FTF), sometimes there are rewards, I’ve seen up to $100.  Some caches are virtual, where they hide it in a personal point of interest, such as a great view or an important location to them.

The next time you’re looking for something to do with the kids, give geocaching a try! It’s also a great activity to do while camping or taking a road trip.  My family and I really want to create a cache and hide it in Austin!

If you have geocache, what’s the coolest thing you have found?  Where would you hide your geocache?
