Whenever I see “Craft With Kids” I tend to instinctively flinch. Is it messy? How long is it going to take? How much is this going to cost me? Is it just going to end up in a landfill? It’s OK, mamas! This one is fun and easy- I promise. All in all, it will take less than $10 and about an hour to complete. Every step (except maybe the hot glue) is easy, so little hands can help create some festive decor. It doesn’t have to be perfect– remember to have fun! You are creating memories with your little helper; the super cute, never-going-to-the-landfill art is just a bonus.
Here are the supplies you will need:
- scissors
- hot glue gun
- measuring tape
- one 28-inch strand of twine
- package of wooden stars
- yarn in red, white, and blue (I am using Sugar ‘n Cream worsted cotton in Red, Soft Ecru, and Black– because the black is more like a faded Navy)
Step 1: Cut the yarn 29 inches in length; you’ll need 25 strands of blue; 21 red; 18 white.
Step 2: Take one strand and fold it in half. Keeping the ends together, place the middle loop under the twine. Keeping the ends together, pull them through the loop to form a knot.
Step 3: Repeat with all the blue strands, then alternate between 3 strands of red and 3 strands of white to complete the flag-inspired stripes.
Step 4: Let your little assistant place 10-12 wooden stars and the adult can hot glue them into place.
Step 5: Trim the uneven yarn ends (if desired) and tie slip knots on to the twine ends. Your new creation is ready for hanging! Or maybe your little helper would rather wear it like a beard, as mine would– either way is good. 😉
I told you it was easy! I love this piece because it’s so versatile — you can hang it from your mantle, on your door, or gift it to the BBQ hostess. Plus, we have enough leftovers to fashion a few bonus projects- I’m thinking a red, white, and blue pop pom garland is up next!
