Ladies! I happily admit that I’m a romance book fanatic. This romance addiction took root after I had my first kid, six years ago, and wanted to occupy my time while pumping. I decided to go with something lighthearted and picked up my first romance novel. If you’re a romance fan I don’t need to explain why this addiction is so great. If you’ve never read a romance, now’s the summer to give it a try.

Maybe, like me, you need a badass biker, alpha werewolf or suave billionaire in your life as a way to give your brain a break from the day-to-day stresses that come with motherhood. The best thing about this genre is that I become vested in characters and know there’s a 99.9% chance that things are going end well. (I’m talking to you George R.R. Martin — who likes to kill off all the good Game of Thrones characters)

Like any style of writing there’s good and bad. I quickly learned in order for a story to hold my interest it has to have a strong female protagonist. If I’m going to spend the next 6-12 hours of my life reading or listening to a character then I need them to be smart and self sufficient; otherwise I catch myself doing a lot of eye rolling and scoffing.

The only thing better than finishing a great book is being able to talk about it. During your summer’s vacation or staycation I hope you’re planning to treat yourself to a new book — these are some I’ve read and LOVED, and some I have on my own wish list.

Here are my top summer recommendations for romance, thriller, biography and nonfiction books:

OutlanderOutlander by Diana Gabaldon.

This historical romance is full of kilt loving, sword swing, Highland adventures in both the old world and new. These book are long and so be prepared to settle into this series.

Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs by Molly Molly Harper Harper.

You want something funny, sexy and happens to have a touch of paranormal (aka vampires or werewolves) then pick up anything by Molly Harper. Be warned, you will spend a lot of time laughing at these books.

J.D. RobbIn Death Series by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts)

If you love Law and Order or CSI this series is for you. Follow a fighter Lieutenant as she takes down murderers in the year 2058 in NYC.  This series is at 42 books and counting so there is a lot of opportunity to fall in love with these characters and try your hand at solving some of these mysteries.

Confessions of a Bad Boy by J.D Hawkins

This is a dirty talking, fast-paced forbidden romance. I love it when an author gives us the story from both the male and female perspective. It’s even better when it actually sounds like a man and not a woman speaking as a man.

JoJoAfter You by Jojo Moyes

This is on my wish list this summer. It’s a the follow-up book to her first novel, Me Before You. I highly recommend this emotionally engaging series, but make sure you have a tissue handy.

S.KingEnd of Watch by Stephen King

Do you want to spend the summer nights on the edge of your seat and biting your nails! Pick up Stephen King’s latest thriller. Not gonna lie, I may be a little too scared to read it!

J.LawsonFuriously Happy by Jenny Lawson

OK, if you are looking for a book that makes you belly laugh and shake your head in disbelief Jenny Lawson is your girl. I picked up one of her titles after a friend recommend it and I was so happy I did. Her newest nonfiction is another one on my wish list for summer reading!

Bobbybones

Bare Bones by Bobby Bones

I’m currently reading this because my husband recommended it. We were both fans of the Bobby Bones show when it was local and he stuck with it now that its on Country music airwaves.  I have to say, if you’re looking something sentimental, funny, and not very long then you’ll enjoy this.

After you read one let me know what you thought. I collect book recommendation like my 6-year-old collects Shopkins so please post your favorites below.

Happy reading!
