Baseball, basketball, rugby, hockey, and football coaches warn their team about it. Pediatric dentists, emergency room physicians, and pediatricians fix it. Moms and dads worry about it.  Dental trauma can cause pain and discomfort in addition to dramatically altering a child’s ability chew and smile comfortably. It is estimated that more than 5 million teeth are knocked out in the U.S. each year. Each lost tooth can cost between $5000-$20000 to appropriately treat and will be a lifelong concern. Unfortunately for our children, traumas are predicted to increase as youth sports become more and more competitive.

Thankfully, there is an effective and simple device that can prevent a large portion of these injuries from causing long-term damage to the mouth. Custom mouth guards can protect the teeth, gums, and lips of your favorite athlete. Recent research has even shown custom mouth guards can reduce the risk of concussions in high school football players.

While all pediatric dentists recommend a custom mouth guard, any mouth guard is better than no mouth guard. If you cannot visit our office for a custom fabricated mouth guard you should be sure to find an over the counter mouth guard with the ADA seal of approval.

Convincing your athlete to wear a mouth guard should be a breeze after you remind them that many of their favorite professional athletes wear them regularly. Stop by Lone Star Pediatric Dental at our Bee Cave location to have a customized athletic mouth guard made for your MVP!
