Writing my own biography is my biggest enemy. If I had extra money, I would hire a writer each time I’m asked to write something about myself. Here I go again!

I was born in Hong Kong to an Irish soccer professional player and Asian-European mother. Shortly after my parents’ discovery of me being Deaf, America called our names.

Being exposed to ASL, Deaf role models, & two young feminist daughters (Shaylee & Ivy) have shaped me into a creator of ASL Nook, children’s book author, sought-after speaker, and media shaper.

In the “hearing world,” I’m automatically labeled as the “Deaf woman.” Sometimes, I’m seen as someone who needs to be fixed when actually I’m proud to be Deaf. As a result, it requires a lot of effort for hearing people see beyond that.

It is exactly the opposite when I step into the Deaf world. A world where I’m seen as Sheena – someone with many layers. A friend, mother, wife, teacher, fly on the wall, pool addict, and a true Southern California girl! On a whim, I will go miles and miles for authentic Chinese food or some good ole’ bangers and chips. I’m an open book so, follow me on Instagram and Twitter!

Social media is my best friend (politics and depressing news aside) for it’s a platform shattering stereotypes, granting me the freedom to create my stuff as I see fit, and connecting me with all walks of life – Deaf and hearing. A weapon that I carry with me for a better tomorrow. It is with deepest privilege and honor to get uncomfortable (my goal for this year!) by being a part of Austin Moms Blog.
