Understanding Love Languages

Children are taught to speak a language at an early age so they can communicate their thoughts and feelings. How awesome would it be for all of us to understand and speak our loved one’s love language? Love language – a concept so simple, yet deeply profound.

This post is inspired by Gary Chapman’s book, “The Five Love Languages” and here’s a brief description of what each of them means:
Words of Affirmation: Expressing affection through spoken affection, praise, or appreciation.
Acts of Service: Actions, rather than words, are used to show and receive love.
Receiving Gifts: Gifting is symbolic of love and affection.
Quality Time: Expressing affection with undivided, undistracted attention.
Physical Touch: With this love language, the speaker feels affection through physical touch.

Once you figure out your love language as well as your partner’s or child’s, you can consciously demonstrate love in those terms, be it ‘acts of service’ or ‘quality time’. Often times, we express love the way we want to receive it. I, for one, enjoy ‘words of affirmation’, and organically give the same in my relationships. Since taking the quiz, I have accepted that my husband’s love language is vastly different from mine. I now make a concerted effort to respond in his language. Similarly, each kid receives love in completely different ways – this I learned through observation, and you can too.

Overall, it all comes down to knowing what’s important to people so you can understand, empathize, and work with them a little better. Everyone is different. We all have different life experiences; we come from different backgrounds. It makes sense that we communicate differently, too.
