Best Cupcakeries In Austin

Surely, I can’t be the only one driving around town thinking to themselves, “Man, I could really go for a cupcake right now.” But being a cupcake connoisseur isn’t a piece of cake. -see what I did there?!- There are a lot of factors that go into making a good cupcake and even more that go into creating a great cupcake experience.

Lucky for us, Austin is chock full of cupcakeries and these places are cranking out DELICIOUS miniature cakes and super cool, chill, family-friendly places to enjoy them.

My favorite spots:

Capital City Bakery-I’m honestly surprised at how much I loved this place. First off, they are 100% vegan. We have a dear friend with a severe egg allergy so I’ve had my fair share of vegan cupcakes. Sadly, they just don’t do it for me. Its easy for them to be dense or gummy and lacking flavor. Y’all, I had to ask the girls at CCB if they had anything vegan and then they reminded me it was ALL vegan. I literally could not tell the difference! Beautiful soft and spongey cake with perfectly sweet “butter”cream in tons of flavor combinations. They love a good theme, the entire month of October brings Halloween cupcakes (i.e. “Dead Velvet” with red food coloring creating blood-like splatters all over the faux cream cheese icing.) and November will host its own fun flavors such as Pumpkin Carrot Cake. The building has a funky 50’s diner vibe, perfect for their Eastside location. They also have a coffee bar, a nice roomy restroom-perfect for the whole family!-free water, carry other sweets and make custom cakes to order.

Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop-I hit up their Eastside location, they also have one on South 1st, and it is ADORABLE. They have a full coffee bar and lots of sweets if your kiddos want cupcakes and you’re in the mood for something else. There are nice big tables with forks and napkins so you can spend some time there. Couches also sit along the end if thats more your style and cute restrooms are available to wash sticky hands. They have vegan and gluten free options and a weekly revolving menu. The carrot cake was INSANE. You need it in your life. They use a classic American buttercream on most cupcakes, which is totally my jam, but can be a tad too sweet for some, so here is your “warning”.

Cupprimo-A North Austin staple, Cupprimo has been pumping out cupcakes for 10 years. Their claim to fame was a stint on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and the product lives up to the hype. They have a rotating weekly menu with a few consistent staples. They offer minis in every flavor they bake that day along with a several gluten-free options. There is plenty of room to sit inside with the kiddos and enjoy a fresh latte from the coffee bar. I’m a big fan of the minis because then I can eat four different flavors but I’ve really only had the equivalent to one cupcake!

I would be remiss not to include some honorable mentions I’ve encountered around town. You can not do a cupcake round up in Austin and not include Hey Cupcake! Hey Cupcake! has several locations around town including Cupcake ATMs and a truck. They’re cupcakes are HUGE and they often have gluten free and/or vegan options. If you are near the UT campus, Polka Dot Cupcake Factory is a cute place to run in a grab some goodies to go. It is a tiny shop but the patio is roomy and there is a sprinkles bar at the checkout so the kids can add their own pizzaz. Last but definitely not least is Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery. They have big cupcakes, minis (which are really just a “normal” size!) and vegan options. They have a full coffee bar and TONS of beautiful pastries. Put this place at the top of your list, y’all. Regardless of whatever sweet treat you like, I guarantee they won’t let you down!

Happy sugar high! Be sure to tell me about your favorite cupcake in Austin in the comments!
