Where To Find Vegan Treats For Christmas

(Or Any Time Of The Year)

Christmas is quickly approaching (WHAT!?! Wasn’t it just Halloween?). There has been a rise of vegans in the last couple of years and it seems that more and more people know someone who is vegan. In an attempt to ensure everyone feels included and able to enjoy your holiday treats I’ve listed several places where you can pick up vegan goodies for that someone special.

For those of you who don’t know why vegans need their own treats, I’ll happily explain. Vegans do not eat meat or animal byproducts. This means no eggs, milk, butter, or inorganic sugar. Some vegans also prefer that their treats don’t have any honey. Some of the places listed below also offer breakfast items and/or meals.

Vegan Bakeries/Shops

Capital City Bakery – While the list is in no order, I do have to admit that Capital City Bakery is my favorite. This all vegan bakery means that you can order anything you see without having to ask if it’s safe for vegans. Their cupcakes are divine, their pies are mouthwatering, and their kolaches make for the perfect breakfast. They also have other items like cookies, brownies, cheesecake, and you can pick up a coffee for yourself as a well deserved treat. Be warned that they do have holiday ordering on their website and if you don’t set aside your treats there might be slim pickings on December 24th.

Mr. Natural – Mr. Natural has been an Austin staple for 30 years! They are a restaurant and bakery that specializes in vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options. They usually have fun events set up for all holidays and have delicious frozen tamales for you to take home and enjoy. Their bakery is no joke and everything is clearly labeled so that you can confidently pick out vegetarian or vegan treats. If you have questions feel free to ask their incredibly friendly and informative staff.

Zucchini Kill – Do you have someone on your list who’s vegan, can’t have gluten or soy? Then Zucchini Kill is the place for you (and them)! This bakery can do custom orders and their selection also changes with the season. Zucchini Kill also strives to have a variety of doughnuts available every weekend. One of my favorite things that they do? Swiss Cake Rolls, try it, you’ll thank me later.

Fat Cats – Fat Cats is a vegan coffee shop that has a daily rotation of vegan treats. Fat Cats does a great job of posting the different treats they have available that day on their social media pages. If you’ve got some time to spare I highly recommend taking a seat at one of their cozy tables and enjoying one of their mouth watering waffles paired with some yummy coffee.

Skull & Cakebones – This craft bakery works closely with other Austin vendors to bring you amazing treats that you’d never guess were vegan. Their brick and motor bakery also offers lunch during the week and brunch on the weekend. They invite you to enjoy their meals when stopping by to pick up items from their bakery. They also work with a variety of stores (mentioned below) where you can stock up on their goods.

Pie Jacked – This shop recently opened its doors in Round Rock. They serve up delicious pies, brownies, cakes, and other goodies that are free of the top 8 allergens making them vegan friendly. They are another shop that also sells at a variety of stores (mentioned below) so you’re able to pick up their goodies while grabbing your groceries! I highly recommend their Mud Pie Crusties, pick up an extra bag for yourself, you won’t want to share!

Roll with it Vegan Bakery – This shop is also located in Round Rock.  They are 100% vegan, 100% delicious, and is a one woman show. She takes custom orders, sells her goodies at festivals, and has open bakery hours on the weekend. Be sure to follow her on social media so that you know what she’s cooked up! There are always kolaches but she’ll sometimes rotate between doughnuts and other amazing holiday goodies.

Sweet Ritual – In need of some amazing vegan ice cream? How about a vegan ice cream cake? Then you need to head over to Sweet Ritual! This phenomenal shop has recently remolded in order to provide more room for their customers to lounge and enjoy their icy treats. All of their ice cream flavors are made in-house and from scratch. You can also pick up pints of ice cream and an ice cream cake for those special occasions. **Please note that their grand reopening is on December 15, 2018.*

Grocery Stores with Vegan Treats

Rabbit Food Grocery – This amazing store is entirely vegan! They carry treats from a variety of local spots in Austin along with other food, drink, and treat options. It’s always an adventure going to Rabbit Food Grocery, you never know what you’re going to find!

Wheatsville – Our local Austin co-op also carries treats from local vegan bakeries/ice cream shops. They also make vegan doughnuts, pies, treats, and breads. If you’ve never taken the time to visit Wheatsville I’d highly recommend it! They are a ‘regular’ store in the sense that they carry food and groceries for vegans and non-vegans alike so you’re sure to find something for everyone!

Whole Foods – Whole Foods carries some treats from local spots, they also have vegan treats in their baked goods section, and you can find some more treats in the frozen and cookie aisle.

Even if you’re not vegan or don’t know anyone who is vegan I recommend trying out each place. Not only will it be an adventure for your taste buds, but you’ll more than likely find a treat at each place that you’ll never be able to live without!

Happy eating….er…I mean Happy Holidays!!
