Summer Mosquito Risks To Pregnant Mamas

Summer Mosquito Risks To Pregnant MamasSummer is coming and so are the mosquitoes that the Texas heat will bring!

Mosquitoes are attracted to us as we exhale and sweat, and since anyone living in Texas is no stranger to sweat, we are bound to be become a walking target for those irritating, red bites. The weather here in Central Texas provides mosquitoes with ideal living and breeding temperatures almost year round, but I don’t want that to keep us from enjoying the outdoors.

Why do we need to be concerned about these tiny pests?
Although these insects are small, they are more than just an annoyance. They can transmit potentially deadly disease. Expecting mamas and littles are at the highest risk for contracting diseases, such as Zika and West Nile, because these diseases can cause serious complications, birth defects and compromise brain development.

Having been through three pregnancies in Texas, I am all too familiar with the worry associated with Zika during pregnancy. I personally was a walking furnace with my babies growing inside me, and since mosquitoes are attracted by our sweat, I might as well have had a target on my swollen belly during the summer months. The scary part is that a pregnant woman, even one without symptoms, can pass Zika to her developing baby.

There are no treatment options or vaccine to prevent the spread of Zika. So what do we do??

• Avoid areas where mosquitoes might be nesting are breeding.
• Avoid being outdoors during dawn and dusk when they are most active.
• Wear Deet repellant and light colored long sleeves and pants.
• Dump out any basins that could catch water from rainfall, such as children’s toys in the yard like dump trucks, buckets, and water tables.

Unfortunately, pregnant or not, I tend to be a magnet for these pesky bugs, and they find me even with all my best repellant attempts. So I was thrilled to learn that Chem Free Pest & Lawn could install a mosquito repellant system in my home to protect my family’s favorite playground – the backyard.
