She will share tips on how to play with your newborn during their wake windows, including how to perform no-cry tummy time activities to develop a solid foundation for all other milestones. She will also teach you how to identify one of the most common infant conditions, torticollis (neck/body tension), which causes head flattening, breastfeeding difficulty, and milestone delay. Early identification and treatment can help prevent the need for a baby helmet, improve latch with breastfeeding, and help your baby feel more comfortable in their body. Hi! My name is Michelle Read. I am a certified Sleep Sense Consultant and mother of two grown boys. I can well remember the struggles I had especially with my firstborn. He cried a lot and every time he did, I fed him. It’s a wonder he didn’t pop for being overfed! I also remember standing over the crib holding the pacifier in his mouth, praying that he would just fall back asleep. Those early days were hard and because I was not getting adequate rest, I felt overwhelmed most of the time. But what I have learned over the years is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Lisa Boyars, MD is a perinatal and reproductive psychiatrist in the UT Health Austin Women’s Reproductive Mental Health Clinic of Texas and Comprehensive Fetal Care Center, a clinical partnership between UT Health Austin and Dell Children’s. She specializes in the diagnosis and management of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and substance use disorders. She is an enthusiastic educator, researcher, and presenter on perinatal and reproductive behavioral health regionally, nationally, and internationally. She has been an investigator in several grant-sponsored research studies and initiatives to provide novel and better care to women with maternal mental health conditions.

Denise Johnson, MD, is a board-eligible obstetrician-gynecologist in Women’s Health, a clinical partnership between Ascension Seton and UT Health Austin. Additionally, Dr. Johnson is an assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Women’s Health. Dr. Johnson earned her medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and her bachelor’s in human biology from Stanford University, where she graduated with honors. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Johnson has completed several global health projects, including an elective OB-GYN placement at the Princess Marina Hospital in Botswana, located in Southern Africa. She also has a special interest in patient safety and quality improvement.

Karla Maguire, MD, MPH, is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist in Women’s Health, a clinical partnership between Ascension Seton and UT Health Austin, and a part of UT Health Austin’s Pregnancy Loss Management care team. Additionally, Dr. Maguire is an associate professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Women’s Health.  Dr. Maguire previously served as the interim Generalist Division Director and the Director of the Ryan Residency Training Program for the University of Miami Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. Her research interests include intrauterine devices and contraception/preventative health screenings in underserved populations.
