Is there anything more mouth-watering than a stack of blueberry pancakes hot off the griddle on a Saturday morning?  When we were kids my mom would send us outside to pick the berries while she whipped up the sourdough batter for breakfast.  We’d return hungry with juice-stained hands and buckets full of tart, wild Alaskan blueberries.

Blueberries are delicious and good for you!  Whether they are wild grown and hand picked, or found

Delicious and good for you.

on shelves at the grocery store fresh or frozen, blueberries are packed full of brain-boosting antioxidants.  This nutrient-rich superfood is high in anthocyanin (which gives them their blue color), they contain vitamin C for immune support, and fiber for tummy health.

At my house we eat lots of blueberries, lots of different ways.  They’re such a versatile, low calorie sweet treat. Eat them fresh as a stand alone snack or a topping for oatmeal, waffles, or yogurt.  Blend them in a smoothie or fold them into muffins, pancakes, or scones. My kids will even pour a bowl of frozen blueberries and enjoy them as a cool treat on a hot afternoon.

In North America the blueberry season runs April – September while the rest of the year we import blueberries from South America.  As we launch into blueberry season, check out a few of my family’s favorite recipes.

Sourdough Blueberry PancakesThese pancakes are light, delicious and bursting with flavor!  When I think pancakes, I think of these, smothered in butter and syrup.  The sourdough starter is the soul of this recipe, you can buy, borrow, or make your own starter.  Add a cup of fresh blueberries right before you spoon the batter onto the griddle.

Me and my patriotic pie.

Blueberry Cobbler – You cannot go wrong with a simple, delicious, easy to make blueberry cobbler

Blueberry Mango CrepesThis labor of love breakfast will transform your kitchen into a french creperie.  The fresh blueberries and sweet mangos spooned over paper-thin confections are to die for.  To simplify this recipe, try ready-to-use crepes from the grocery store.

American Pie – This sweet and tart pie is almost too pretty to eat.  The patriotic crust is laced with sugar and filled with blueberries and cherries.  Impressive to look at, surprisingly simple to make, and perfect for Memorial Day or 4th of July picnics.

Blueberry Lemon Tarts

Blueberry Lemon Tarts – A pint of blueberries blended with fresh lemon juice set in a buttery crust – just…yes.  So good, and the filling has the prettiest color that will brighten your table any time of year.  These are my fav!

Fresh Blueberry Mojito – (Food and Wine)  This delicious beverage with muddled mint and blueberries is perfect for sipping on a warm spring evening.  The stunning color makes this simple to make cocktail natural food dye. You can use club soda in place of rum to make an equally refreshing non-alcoholic version

Blueberry Muffins – These blueberry muffins have the best texture – the sour cream makes them dense and moist. Bursting with berries, these might just be the ultimate blueberry muffins.

Blueberry Beet Smoothie – this cool creamy breakfast beverage can boost your immune system.  It’s packed with antioxidants from the beets and berries, and has extra Vitamin C from the citrus.  There’s yogurt in the recipe so it has healthy bacteria for your gut and the ginger root serves up anti-inflammatory compounds.  Did I mention it’s also delicious?

How do you love to enjoy blueberries?  Have you ever picked your own?
