Getting your baby’s hair cut for the first time is a huge milestone. I got all misty-eyed as it was happening because my little boy suddenly looked so much older without his babyish locks! As for my daughter, I related to her in a whole new way: seeing her in draped in that salon cape and relaxing at the shampoo bowl reminded me how much us girls truly relish in that salon experience. However, haircuts can also be a challenging undertaking. A staggering number of kids are afraid of it, actually. Finding a stylist who is not only skilled at cutting hair, but also experienced with young children can be tough.

Here are my top two places in Austin for stress-free kids haircuts:

Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids (Northwest Hills location): Sharkey’s was my first-ever experience visiting a hair salon that specializes in kids. Boy, I just couldn’t believe the lengths they went through to cater to the enjoyment of children! There are Frozen-themed Jeeps & Lightning McQueen race car chairs, TVs at every station, and balloons & lollipops given out at the end. There is a hot pink Tween Lounge in the back for girls, with Hollywood-style vanity lighting, sparkly nail polish, and princess dresses. They even host birthday parties where the birthday girl and her friends all get glam together. Older kids can get their game-on with XBOX or PS4 on their 40″ flat screens, too. These little things add up to make the whole thing easy on parents and tons of fun for kids.

Cookie Cutters Haircuts for Kids: Whimsical primary colors, a mini-playscape in the waiting area, and Netflix on-demand are just some of the kid-oriented amenities at Cookie Cutters. Kids haircuts are their speciality and they aim to create a safe space for ALL kids, no matter if a child does well with haircuts or not. Furthermore, they have received special training with the Autism Society of Texas and are recommended as an Autism Friendly Business. Get your entire crew trimmed up in one visit on Wednesdays, when they offer a “Family Day” special: $19.95 for the first cut, and $8 for every additional. Four locations across Austin: Sunset Valley, Pflugerville, Round Rock, and the Arboretum.
