I’ve been married almost twelve years and have yet to celebrate Wife Appreciation Day. Have y’all heard of this holiday? I asked my husband if he secretly knew about it, and he humorously replied… “Isn’t every day Wife Appreciation Day? (Ha! One can dream!) According to National Day Calendar, Wife Appreciation Day honors wives similarly to how Mother’s Day honors Moms, when there are no children in the marriage.

No children in the marriage. HMMMM…

As I started to think about my role as “wife”, I had an AHA moment. I noticed that I’ve totally colluded my role as Mom with my role as wife.

Case in point, I was trying to find a professional photo of Max and I for this post. I have hundreds of photos of our family, or of me and the kids, but how many photos do I have with my husband of nearly twelve years?
Excluding our wedding weekend and {thousands of low quality iPhone photos}, I have
THREE professional photos of Max and I.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore being a Mom, and motherhood is a defining role in my life.

But I also feel incredibly lucky to be a wife. Being a wife DOES deserve a stand alone holiday. A wife is half of the equation for a strong marriage. The role takes dedication, partnership, respectful communication, trust, humor and in my case, day dates!

I’ve decided here and now to acknowledge and cherish my role as wife. To quit neglecting the passion, love and fun that comes from being a wife. Even when motherhood & our over scheduled life depletes me.

Now that I’ve reawakened my role as wife. Let’s talk about celebrating!!!

How is this different than celebrating an anniversary you ask? To me, an anniversary honors your accomplishments as a couple. The family and life you’ve built together.  Wife appreciation is honoring and appreciating the individual and thanking her for holding up her part of the marriage.

Truth be told, my husband is a professional at making me feel special on a very regular basis. {Sorry to make you cringe!!}. He brings me coffee to my bed side table, makes killer egg breakfasts, he takes the kids to get tacos on Saturday mornings so I can squeeze in a work out, and he picks up “just because” gifts fairly frequently.

When thinking about how I want to be celebrated as a wife, my bases are pretty covered. BUT since this is my first Wife Appreciation Day I came up with a few more wishes for good measure.

  1. I would love a hand written note from my hubs professing his love and admiration for all I do :).
  2. I would love flowers, coffee and paleo chocolate chip cookies
  3. I would love to have full control of the TV remote. For once!!
  4. I would love a well planned lunch date for just the two of us
  5. I would love the items on my “honey do list” to be magically done without nagging
  6. I would love the junk drawers to STAY organized. {Ok this will never happen}.

Nevertheless, even if none of these wishes come true, I feel very blessed to be going through life with a partner that is truly the other half to my whole. I love being a wife and I’m super excited for September 15th!#wifeappreciationday here I come!

How did you celebrate Wife Appreciation Day?!

While we are on the topic mark your calendar and start planning for Husband Appreciation Day. It’s April 20, 2020!
