When all of my friends around me were raving about laser hair removal and getting their under arms, faces, legs, and way down under area hair removed, I just couldn’t get behind it. I mean… is shaving really THAT big of a deal? Then my kids started to age, which means I started to age {that’s a different story though}, and pool days became more abundant and time for me became obsolete. Let’s just say …. a dry shave on the bikini line 5 minutes before rushing into 100+ degree temps to the pool doesn’t really work…. actually it’s painful … ask me how I know.

After much reluctancy, I decided to take the plunge and experience laser hair removal firsthand. Ummmmmm…. y’all. I can’t believe I was so stubborn and waited this long. It’s AMAZING!!!

And before we get into the p’s and q’s of laser hair removal, please for the love make sure you have someone who is EXPERIENCED! I hit the jackpot with Kaylee of Austin Laser Solutions. Kaylee has medical grade cosmetic laser experience since 2005 and has mastered both the science and art of laser hair removal, photofacial and other cosmetic laser treatments. She is TRIPLE certified, currently holding Texas Tech., Texas Senior, & Texas Professional Level Licenses as well as Laser Safety Officer. Oh, and y’all she’s offering you 50% OFF if you mention AustinMoms!!!

If you’re like me and you’re a first-timer, here are some tips you NEED to know!

  1. Shave beforehand.

Okay I had no clue I need to be shaved beforehand. In my mind, my technician needed to SEE the hair to POOF, make it disappear. Fortunately, I wasn’t a woolly mammoth or anything but I did have a brief panic attack when they asked if I had shaved. Do yourself a favor and remember to shave beforehand or they will have to do it for you!

  2. You should exfoliate

It’s recommended that you exfoliate the treated skin at least two or three times per week. You can use a loofah sponge or washcloth in the shower, rubbing your skin to ensure that your skin can properly shed the dead hair cells. Gentle rubbing can promote exfoliation without irritating your skin or causing ingrown hairs.

  3. Laser hair removal isn’t necessarily permanent.

You will most likely need to go back for touchups. While I noticed an immediate difference after just my 1st session, Austin Laser Solutions recommends at least 6 treatments + annual touchups. Most people report 90 percent permanent reduction in hair growth but fluctuating hormones can make hair grow back.

  4. Not all lasers are built the same.

The Gold Standard for Laser Hair Removal in all Fitzpatrick skin types.  It is a dual wavelength laser platform that combines the fastest and most powerful laser for high performance treatment capabilities in terms of speed, efficacy, easy to use, performance, safety and patient satisfaction. With advanced technology provided by Syneron Candela we are able to treat all skin tones.

  5. This is not a spa treatment.

Laser hair removal hurts….not “I’m birthing a baby” pain or anything, but it certainly doesn’t feel good. On a scale from 1-10 with a 10 feeling like I’m being stabbed over and over, it’s about a 4.

  6. Don’t tweeze or wax between sessions.

So the hairs just kind of start to fall out. At first it will look like a piece of pepper stuck in your skin and as tempting as it may be, don’t pluck the hair out or wax in between sessions.

  7. You could be spread eagle or spreading your butt cheeks.

Depending on what area you go with, your technician will get ALL up in THERE and it’s legit no big deal. I mean after birthing a human this should be a breeze!

  8. It stinks… literally.

It makes sense, but I was surprised at first. And then I felt embarrassed that my hair smelled so bad. And then I remembered that this is literally what this person does for a living… zaps hair.

  9. It’s a crazy quick appointment.

I had a large area service and my appointment from walking in the door to out of the door was 15 minutes.

  10. This is a luxury for sure, but it’s not as expensive as I thought!

It’s certainly relative, but I remember 15+ years ago thinking laser hair removal was so out of reach. It’s really not as expensive as it use to be and a lot of times there are bundle specials and deals!

  11. Just say NO to Sun!!

Laser hair removal works best when there is a contrast between skin and hair, so untanned skin works best. With that being said, having a session and then exposing the treated area to the sun without SPF will cause extreme sun damage like hypo (white spots) and hyper-pigmentation (brown spots). Your skin is extremely sensitive and vulnerable to the sun after a treatment. So take caution and wear your sunscreen, it will help you in more ways then one.

Laser Hair Removal is a game-changer and here are just a few of the perks!!

  • ZERO bumps post-shaving… like seriously not one.
  • Not going to lie, use to be that girl plucking ingrown hairs out of my bikini line… nope, no more, not going to do because guess what? I don’t need to do it!
  • The appointments are 5 weeks apart so this process isn’t some time-intensive drain on my schedule.
