School has always come easier to me. I was the type of student who studied hard, yes, but earned A’s almost effortlessly. Even the most daunting of subjects, like Organic Chemistry and AP Calculus, were typically something I enjoyed. So much so, in fact, that I tutored both of those courses during my high school and undergrad years. Because of this, I had never had much experience on the other side of the fence when it came to hiring a tutor…until I became a mom.

When my daughter was in her later elementary school years, she began to struggle with math. My husband and I tried to help her ourselves, but it often ended in frustration and tears — sometimes on both ends. I knew after my typically sweet and laid back girl flipped her pencil across the room that it was time to bring in the professionals. There happened to be a Sylvan Learning Center down the street from our home, and I had heard nothing but excellent reviews from other local parents. I called them the following day and was immediately given a fantastic experience. They listened to my needs, as well as chatted directly with my daughter to see where her frustrations lay. My daughter began after school tutoring that next week, and I noticed an almost immediate difference.

We all want to raise happy, confident kids, and it’s pretty implied that we will go to great lengths to help them to be successful. It’s truly an incredible feeling, though, when others care as much as we do — that is the dedication that we felt through Sylvan. The staff were so accommodating to our needs and really took every step to make sure my daughter felt comfortable immediately. The best part was that she didn’t feel helpless anymore when it came to understanding her math. The Sylvan Learning team gave her the confidence to understand the problems and apply them to the work in her classroom. What was once an anxiety ridden subject for her began to morph into a subject she tolerated well, and dare I say it, even grew to enjoy.

A few years down the road, we once again needed tutoring for my daughter when science became difficult for her. Sylvan Learning stepped in and almost immediately eased our stress. A bit older now, she was a tougher critic, and they still managed to make the material interesting and exciting.

Now with Covid-19, many students are opting for virtual tutoring. I’m so impressed how Sylvan Learning has pivoted to offer both options so children learning from home are still able to get the help they need to be successful. We’re looking ahead to Test Prep for the SAT, and once again, we will undoubtedly be turning to Sylvan Learning for hands on support. They truly excel at what they do!
