Well, hello there! My name is Martine Boursiquot-LaConte and I am thrilled to have been chosen to add my voice to this beautifully diverse and dynamic community of Austin moms.

Born and raised in New York City, I never in a million years would have guessed that I’d end up living in Texas, but here we are! Ever since my husband Chris and I moved to Austin exactly 4 years ago, this magical city has easily cemented itself as one of our favorite cities in the world. This city is even more special to us because it’s where we decided to finally plant roots—we bought our first home here and had our first child (our precious son Julian) here as well.

My friends and family know me as the ultimate organizer and planner. I’m a pro at multi-tasking and problem solving, skills that all kicked into overdrive when we had our son!  I love traveling, exploring different cultures through its people and food, music, dancing and am endlessly fascinated by all things space science and space exploration (both in real life as well as in fiction).

I’ve always been one to dream big, but my Type-A personality has always keep me grounded in reality until I had thoroughly researched all possible options and devised a plan A, B and C before making a decision (story of my life!). But once Julian made his dramatic debut into our lives, that’s when we quickly learned that no matter how much you researched and strategized, a newborn doesn’t care how many books or articles you’ve read—baby’s gonna do what baby’s gonna do!

I’m a first-generation Haitian American who grew up with a huge extended family that overflowed with togetherness, food, music and dancing. So while we absolutely love living in Austin, the distance from family can be challenging at times since my parents and sister are back in New York and my husband’s family lives in Wisconsin. While I didn’t necessarily appreciate my heritage when I was younger, I am striving to ensure our biracial son feels connected to my ancestral culture.

With over a year of motherhood under my belt, while I still feel like I don’t know anything at times, it’s incredible to me what I do know. Most importantly, I know that we love this little guy more than we thought possible and while parenting (especially during a global pandemic) has felt impossible at times, we simply cannot picture our life without him. We can’t wait to show him the world beyond Austin once it’s safe to do so!

Now the real question—why am I here as a contributing writer on Austin Moms? I’ve had an extensive career in advertising, event planning and content creation. After having our son, I decided to temporarily put my career on hold to raise our son through the pandemic. That time also gave me the space to figure out what I’m truly passionate about, which is creating content in spaces dedicated to and connecting with women. I’m excited to discuss all things motherhood/womanhood and while I definitely still consider myself a “newbie” mom, it brings me great joy for the opportunity to

impart the occasional nugget of wisdom to other new-ish moms. Thank you Austin Moms Blog for letting me be part of this community!

Martine Boursiquot-LaConte
Martine is a native New Yorker who (along with her husband Chris) lived in several different cities over the course of a decade until fate brought them to Austin, where they would finally plant roots and start a family. Even though they live far from their respective families and miss them dearly, they are loving raising their first child--a curious, brave and hilarious toddler named Julian and their dog Coco in this great city. Despite being more than two years into this wild ride called parenthood, she still feels like a newbie mom and knows there is a ton more to learn about her amazing child, husband and herself as they navigate this new and exciting life together. Passions include travel, live music, spontaneously dancing to her perfectly curated Spotify playlists and doing silly things to make her son laugh!
