July is here in Austin, Texas and it is HOT! We just finished Austin’s hottest June ever on record and it looks to be like a similar situation for July. As much as fun in the sun is trending right now, we have to think about how to beat the heat at home too! Splash pads and water parks are fun, but we realistically cannot do these activities every single day. Here are a few ideas to stay cool, beat the heat, and have some fun at the same time too!

  1. Homemade popsicles! These are so fun to make. My kids love making popsicles and experimenting with different ingredient combinations and flavors. Mix berries with yogurt, or a zesty lemon treat. There are so many possibilities!
  2. Kids love crafting! Grab some construction paper, markers, scissors (adult supervised), cotton balls, ribbons, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, paint, and anything else you can think of. There are tons of crafts for kids out there. A quick google search and your child can pick out their favorite activitu and get to crafting!
  3. Family movie time! Bring out the popcorn and snacks and maybe even a sleeping bag too. Watch classics like The Sandlot, Dr. Dolittle, or Ghostbusters!
  4. Family games! From board games, to charades, even a classic pillow fight! The most important thing is that the family is bonding and everyone is enjoying themselves.
  5. Although this is not as fun, it is a great opportunity to look through toys and things that no one uses or wants anymore. Give these items to your local charity or have an early morning garage sale!
  6. Story Time. Grab your favorite books and read to each other, or even better tell summer time camp ghost stories! Those are always fun. Just make sure the little ones will not get too scared.
  7. Stay in the shade. Who says you have to be in the home? If you do not have shade at home, now is the perfect time to find that summer umbrella for the patio and rearrange your space.
  8. Sprinklers an kiddie pools! Do you have water activities so your kids can stay cool this summer at home? Plenty of stores both online and brick-and-mortar have many available options for you.
  9. Have friends over. Other people are probably going through the same thing! A friend or family member visiting can be a nice break and a good change of pace.
  10. Create a summer bucket list of everything you want to do before it ends!

I hope you enjoyed this list and it gave you some ideas on what to do to beat the heat at home. It is so incredibly hot right now and we still have a couple more months of this extreme heat in our near future. Stay safe and hydrated if you do venture out!
