There have been over 100,000 power outages in Austin reported–and climbing! As freezing rain continues to make its way through the area it’s important to brace ourselves (while remaining calm–#momlife) and preparing for lights out. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you and your family are without power.
Stay inside! Even if the kids are BEGGING to go out and touch the ice.
Layer up! Take the blanket forts down and wrap yourselves up.
Text>Call — save as much of your phone battery as possible!
Keep all windows and doors closed. Locate any drafts. Roll towels at the bottom of windows and doors to keep the heat in.
Turn off all lights except one to indicate when the power is restored.
Only use your fireplace if it is properly CLEANED.
Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors CLOSED to preserve food.
Unplug all major appliances and heaters.
DO NOT use stoves, ovens or portable grills to heat your home, as it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning that can result in hospitalization or death.
If you have access to a generator, only use it in a well-ventilated area.
