Hey, y’all, hey! After the longest January ever, it’s finally February – not only Black History Month but a month set aside to celebrate love! Back in the Day, this month would instantly insight a feeling of dread. I always felt as if there were nothing to get excited over if I were single. As I got older and more comfortable in my single-girl skin, I realized that I could celebrate love in any capacity. While having a sweet romantic Valentine’s Day is always nice, I’ve had my share – what I really enjoy is celebrating Galentine’s Day.

Single or not, us mamas need that! Factoring in time to celebrate our tribes is important. With all the adulting we do from Day to Day, if your life is like mine, sometimes girlfriend time is limited. Galentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to open up the group chat and make some fun plans with your best girls. They are, after all, the ones you call for those unfiltered venting sessions, the ones who just get it.

Here are a few reasons why I think celebrating Galentine’s Day is important:

  1. It helps us remember that we are more than the roles we take on in life.
  2. We need a moment to let our hair down for some uninterrupted fun.
  3. Life is hard without girlfriends; taking a moment to celebrate having each other is a big deal.
  4. Single girls deserve to celebrate too!
  5. It’s a great opportunity to connect your girlfriends who have never met.
  6. You get to wear that dress you’ve been dying to wear. – We all have that one outfit you need a special occasion for, ya know, the one that’s just a little out of the box for you.

This year I’m going to brunch with some old and new friends, and I’m so excited to wear something flashing and pink and spend a few hours eating good food and laughing with a group of extraordinary ladies! If you’ve never celebrated, now is the perfect time to start! Not sure about the idea? A group event like this brunch I’m going to would be fun. It’s an excellent opportunity to get together with your girls and meet new people. Plus, you don’t have to put any thought into the planning because it’s already done! You can just show up and be ready to turn up! Whooo hooo!

Need some other ideas on ways to celebrate Galentine’s Day? I got you!

  1. Give it a theme! Dress as you would have in the year you met and do a few fun things you would have back then. It may seem silly, but window shopping at the mall wearing neon scrunchies and slap bracelets will definitely provide the laughter you might need!
  2. Make it fancy – Wear your favorite heels at your favorite fine dining restaurant.
  3. Spa Day – need I say more? Mani-pedis, massages, throw in a few mimosas – yesssss!
  4. Day trip – if you have the time, why not hop in the car for the day to change the scenery – try new foods, visit a museum, or whatever would be fun for you!
  5. PJ Night – fuzzy socks, favorite movies, tons of snacks, and an overload of girl talk! I don’t care how old I get; nights like this will forever be a fun time.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you show your girls some love. Solid, authentic, heartfelt friendship isn’t always easy to come by. Having a few ride or dies in your corner is a gift. There’s some truth to that Sex in The City line – “Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates….”
