A closet clean-out can be a great way to declutter your life and create a more minimalist lifestyle. It is not one of my favorite cleaning projects, but I feel so much better when my closet is organized, and I know what I have in it, so I can quickly choose what to wear each day.

Removing articles of clothing from your closet can be freeing but also nerve-racking, especially if you do not want to get rid of clothing with a story behind it. Remember to be honest with yourself about what you wear and don’t, and organize your closet in a way that works for you. With a little effort, you can create a functional and beautiful wardrobe.

Following these tips can make the process easier and more successful.

Set aside enough time
A closet clean-out is something that takes time. Depending on the size of your closet and the amount of clothing, it may take several hours or even a whole day. Make sure you allot enough time to do the job completely.

Take everything out
The first step to a successful closet clean-out is to take everything out of your closet. This way, you can see everything you own and decide what to keep and what you want to discard or donate.

Sort through your clothes
Once everything is out of your closet, it’s time to sort through your clothes. Start by creating three piles: Keep, donate, and throw away. Be honest with yourself about what you wear and what you don’t. If you haven’t worn something in the last year, let it go.

Try-on session
When you’re going through your clothes, it’s important to try everything on. This will help you decide whether it still fits and whether you still like the style. If you wore something quite a while ago, try it on again to see if it still looks good on you.

Consider your lifestyle
As you’re going through your clothes, consider your lifestyle. Do you need formal wear for work or special occasions? Do you have enough casual clothes for weekends and errands? Make sure your wardrobe reflects your lifestyle.

Organization is key
Once you’ve decided what to keep, it’s time to organize your closet. There are many ways to organize a closet, so find the best system for you. Some people prefer to organize their clothes by color, while others prefer to sort them by type (e.g., pants, shirts, dresses, etc.).

Storage solutions
To keep your closet organized, it’s important to use storage solutions. Organization solutions can include things like hangers, shelves, and storage bins. Use these items to keep your clothes neat and easy to find.

Keep it up
A closet clean-out is the first step to an organized closet. To keep your closet organized, you must habitually put things back where they belong. Make it a point to quickly clean up your wardrobe weekly to keep it looking its best.
