ERCOT is still urging users to conserve energy if possible. The amount of reported power outages in Austin aren’t as bad as they have been, but a conservation appeal is still in place.  If your lights are still on, it’s still important to prep (while remaining calm–#momlife). Here are a few things to keep in mind if you and your family are without power.

Stay inside! Even if the kids are BEGGING to go out.

Layer up! Take the blanket forts down and wrap yourselves up.

Keep all windows and doors closed. Locate any drafts. Roll towels at the bottom of windows and doors to keep the heat in.

Turn off all lights except one to indicate when the power is restored.

Only use your fireplace if it is properly CLEANED.

Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors CLOSED to preserve food.

Unplug all major appliances and heaters.

DO NOT use stoves, ovens or portable grills to heat your home, as it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning that can result in hospitalization or death.

If you have access to a generator, only use it in a well-ventilated area.
