I rarely do yoga classes by myself, but I have really enjoyed doing it with my daughter, starting when she was 2 years old. Compared to an adult class, yoga with kids and parents feels less intimidating to me, free of any pressure or expectations. My daughter often spends the class using me as her jungle gym, and I just try to sneak in a downward dog when I can or attempt the poses with her clinging to my back.
While it’s not as relaxing as a solo class, doing yoga with kids can be a breath of fresh air. In the midst of the chaotic and demanding work of parenting, it’s a great reminder of the power of deep breaths, mindfulness, and nature, if you’re yoga-ing outside. When I’m lying on my back in the grass with my child resting on my stomach, I feel at peace knowing we’re doing something restorative for both of us.
