What is Zilker Theatre Productions?

Zilker Theatre Productions has been a cornerstone of Austin’s arts scene since 1959, offering top-notch musical theater for locals and visitors alike. Renowned for their free annual Zilker Summer Musical at the Zilker Hillside Theater, they also support community outreach and youth training programs. This vibrant organization celebrates creativity, inclusivity, and the magic of live theater, enriching Austin’s cultural fabric.

What is Legally Blonde About?

Legally Blonde the Musical is a vibrant adaptation of the beloved 2001 film, following the journey of Elle Woods, a bubbly and fashion-savvy sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. What, like it’s hard?

Despite initial underestimation by her peers and professors, Elle’s unwavering optimism, intelligence, and unique perspective allow her to thrive in a challenging environment. With the help of her new friends, Emmett and Paulette, Elle discovers her true potential and passion for law, ultimately realizing that she is more than just a pretty face. This empowering and entertaining musical celebrates themes of self-discovery, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to oneself, leaving audiences inspired by Elle’s journey from the sorority house to the courtroom.

When, where, and how long is Legally Blonde?

Legally Blonde the Musical runs every Thursday-Sunday till August 17 at the Zilker Hillside Theatre. The show starts at 8:15 pm and runs till about 11 pm. No tickets or reservations are needed! The show is free to attend, with donations encouraged.

When should I arrive?

The venue is open-seating, so it’s good to come well before the show to secure the best view. You can start laying your blankets and low-back chairs at 6 pm. Arriving early ensures you can find a good spot on the Hillside; it also gives you time to cool off at Barton Springs pool before the show starts.

ZTP has also started a new program called Opening Act, inviting local businesses to set up community engagement activities on the Hillside before the show begins. You can look forward to yoga, content creation, kid craft stations, and more. Check out ZTP’s Instagram for the schedule and details.

Is the show appropriate for kids?

One topic that we think every human needs to hear, no matter their age, is Legally Blonde’s focus on smashing stereotypes. Just like the movie, some of the humor is PG-13. As a parent, it’s up to you to decide if you want your trip to Zilker Hillside to be a family, date, or a moms’ night!

Can I bring food and drinks?

Bringing food and cold beverages is encouraged! Feel free to bring your picnic and snacks. The theatre area has plenty of space for families to enjoy a meal together before the show. However, alcoholic beverages and glass bottles are not allowed. Zilker Theatre Productions also has a concessions stand where you can purchase snacks, candies, t-shirts, Legally Blonde bucket hats, and more.

Can I bring my pet?

A lot happens on the stage during the show: lights, loud music, singing, and dancing. We’d recommend leaving your fur babies at home for this one, though there are very cute dogs in the play, and there are few that are adoptable after the show’s run.

Can I donate to Zilker Theatre Productions?

Most definitely! The shows are free every summer, though they are not free to put on. Donations are appreciated and help ZTP keep the old Austin tradition alive. During intermission, the cast will come out to the Hillside with buckets for donations. The program also has QR codes if you’d prefer to donate electronically.

If you feel generous, you can also visit their website now, Zilker.org/donate.

Know that your donation goes to putting on the summer musical and also funds audition workshops and other community engagement events throughout the year.

Any considerations for the weather?

Texas summers are H.O.T. As an outdoor venue, keeping an eye on the weather forecast is essential. Bring sunscreen, hats, fans, and insect repellent for added comfort during the performance. If rain is forecast, pack rain ponchos or small umbrellas just in case. The cast also came up with a list of ways to keep cool on the hillside. Check it out on Instagram.

What’s parking like?

Parking is metered by the City of Austin; parking is FREE on Thurs/Fri; On Sat/Sun, parking is free after 6 pm. Signs will direct you to Theatre Parking in the Polo Fields at the top of the Hill. The parking near Barton Springs Pool and the Hillside Theatre is blocked off for cast and crew between 6–8 pm. It is also limited because the Barton Springs bathhouse is being renovated. It’s a good idea to carpool. Consider using ride-sharing services or public transportation to reduce traffic congestion.

Are there restrooms?

Restrooms and porta potties are available near the theatre’s entrance. During intermission, be prepared for lines.

What should I wear?

Dress in comfortable and weather-appropriate attire. If you come to lay your blanket at 6 pm, wear hats, sunglasses, and an umbrella to protect yourself from the Texas sun. Consider bringing a light sweater or jacket, as temperatures might drop during the evening.

Are there bugs?

Since it’s an outdoor venue surrounded by nature, you might encounter insects. Bees and ants are in no short supply. Apply insect repellent on you and your kids to prevent any unwelcome bug bites.

Is this show accessible?

Zilker has partnered with ACES and will have a sensory cool-down room for neurodivergent guests every Thursday.

ASL interpreted shows will happen on July 18 and July 26. There is also ADA seating.

Can I bring lawn chairs?

You can bring your low-back chairs or rent them from ZTP directly for $5/chair.

Can I take photos or videos?

Feel free to take pictures and capture memories. Please turn off the flash during the performance so actors and other audience members are not distracted. Please tag @ZilkerTheatreProductions

Should I stay after the finale?

We 100% recommend staying after the show! The actors and actresses always come on the stage side after the show to meet the audience, sign programs, and take photos.

What other media has been produced about the show?

ZTP launched a podcast called, ZTP Behind the Scenes, for the run of the show. Characters from Legally Blonde, the director, and other cast and crew members share insights on what it takes to make a summer musical.

Anything else I should know about?

Every Saturday at 7 pm is Be a Star Saturday. The cast teaches an 8-count dance on the stage. Come with your friends, family, or solo, and have fun learning a few moves from the show.

With these tips in mind, you’re all set for a beautiful evening at Zilker Hillside Theatre to see Legally Blonde.

We know you’ll have a fantastic time!
