Whoever created the first coffee shop with a play area deserves a medal. Let’s face it, especially when kids are young, playdates can be just as much for the parents as they are for the kids. And parents need coffee, and a nice patio, and the ability to drink our beverage in peace while the kids play nearby.

A coffee playdate can actually be a bit of self-care. If your kids cooperate, you can catch up with a friend, engage in grown-up conversation, and actually drink your coffee while it’s hot. Whenever I compile a list like this, I’m reminded again how grateful I am to live in a city that welcomes families and designs spaces with parents’ and children’s enjoyment in mind.
Here are the best spots in Austin for a coffee playdate.
Brentwood Social House | 78756
1601 W Koenig Ln
This true neighborhood spot has great coffee and tea, delicious baked goods (you must try the Bakewell tart), and snacks for kids. There’s a small indoor play area and a fenced-in outdoor area with a pirate ship playscape.
Merit Coffee (Triangle location) | 78751
4615 N Lamar Blvd #303A
Merit serves top-notch coffee, and you can take it over to the playground that sits in the middle of the Triangle complex to sip it while the kids play.
Double Trouble | 78751
103 N Loop Blvd E.
This welcoming spot has cool Austin vibes and a big outdoor space with a turf play area.
Lazarus Brewing (Airport Blvd location) | 78702
4803 Airport Blvd
Lazarus Brewing opens early and serves coffee and breakfast tacos. The bright turquoise pirate ship playscape (in an enclosed area) is a nice bonus.
Littlefield’s Tacos + Coffee | 78703

This lovely outdoor venue offers plenty of shade over its large patio and fully enclosed astroturf climbing area. They serve food and beverages from Goldy’s, Veracruz All Natural, and Cookie Rich.
Dear Austin | 78704
2310 S Lamar Blvd #102
Opened in May 2024, this feel-good place is family-friendly, with an outdoor patio and sand box. The charming decor includes an interactive mural where you can write a love letter to Austin. Their goal is to “foster empathy and understanding for everyone who calls Austin home, even if only for a short while.”
Cosmic (South Austin location) | 78704
121 Pickle Rd
There’s not a playground at Cosmic, but the large patio, fenced koi pond, and chicken coop will keep kids busy while you enjoy a coffee or a taco from the food truck.
Meanwhile Brewing Co. | 78744
3901 Promontory Point Dr
They don’t just brew beer, they brew coffee, serve breakfast tacos, and open at 8 a.m. during the week! My kids love the sprawling, natural playscape and soccer field.
Cenizo | 78744
7701 Colton-Bluff Springs Rd
Coffee trucks like Cenizo are what keep Austin “weird” despite all its changes. The ambiance is cozy and friendly, with antiques and sculptures, toys for kids, and comfy chairs. The best part is the tree house with a spiral staircase that both kids and grown-ups can explore.
Winston’s | 78669
4900 Bee Creek Rd (Lakeway)
This Lakeway spot feels chic and airy inside and has a nice playscape in the back. You can get coffee, cold-pressed juice, breakfast tacos, gourmet sourdough toast, and wood-fire pizzas.
Fair Lane | 78620
29035 Ranch Rd 12 (Dripping Springs)
This place has it all—a pretty interior space, delicious coffee and baked goods, food trucks, and a playscape. They also specialize in hand-crafted cocktails if that’s more your style.

Located off I-35, this brewery is a 3.5-acre oasis just south of downtown. They’ve got a playscape, corn hole, and they serve coffee, of course.

10542 Menchaca Rd
Enjoy coffee and delicious eats while the kiddos run around the backyard garden, which includes toys and a castle-inspired playscape.

This delicious coffee trailer is located in the Way South Food Park, which has a big playground and tons of space to run around or sit and chill.

For south Austin families, this Buda spot is a gem. There’s a large outdoor patio, food trucks, and a playscape.
I’m ready to try them all with you, Shep and Rosie.
