Father’s Day is June 19th– the day to honor the dad in your life. Whether you are celebrating your partner, or another father figure, it should be a day full of fun activities the whole family can enjoy. While a thoughtful gift would show your appreciation, getting out of the house and spending the day together could tap into one of the best presents: quality time. For the dad who loves being outdoors, below is our top 10 North Austin outdoor Father’s Day ideas.

No matter what kind of guy Dad is, there’s something on this list for him.

1. Outdoor Father’s Day with THE ADVENTURER

Hike, bike, or swim some of North Austin’s incredible parks including Walnut Creek Park, Balcones District Park, St. Edwards Park and Bull Creek Park. Pack dad’s favorite lunch (for us it’s tacos of course) and spend the day exploring nature, forgetting you are still in the city.

2. For THE BEER CONNOISSEUR

Enjoy an outdoor beer tasting at one of the myriad of breweries North Austin has to offer. Here is a map to plan out your brewery tour and get your cheers started.

3. Father’s Day with THE FUTBOL FAN

Attend an upcoming Austin FC game or catch a game at The Pitch. Both options include a day full of futbol, food, and fun with the family. A total goal!

4. Father’s Day with THE TEE-RIFIC GOLFER

With three floors, and a bar and restaurant, an afternoon at Topgolf would be a hole-in-one. Dad can show off his skills and finally see how perfect his drive is with their high-tech balls that score themselves.

5. Outdoor Father’s Day with THE FOODIE

Treat Dad to brunch at one of the many outdoor patios at The Domain. Culinary Dropout has yard games to play in their outdoor dining area…it could get competitive but what Dad doesn’t love that?

6. Father’s Day with THE BASEBALLER

Spend an afternoon with America’s favorite pastime. Catch a Round Rock Express game and sit back, enjoy a cold beverage, and keep that mitt handy in case you or Dad catch a fly ball.

7. Father’s Day with THE VINTAGE LOVER

Step back in time with Austin Steamtrain Association’s Father’s Day ride. According to their website, the vintage train cars from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s travel a 44-mile round trip excursion departing from Cedar Park and traveling down the South San Gabriel River. A memory Dad will never forget.

8. Father’s Day FOR THE KID AKA DAD

Splash into Father’s Day at Typhoon Texas outdoor waterpark in Pflugerville. With multiple waterslides, a lazy river and other attractions, this is the perfect place to take the Dad who’s just a big kid at heart.

9. FOR THE LAKE LIFE LOVER

Spend the day at Lake Travis. Dad could enjoy the day swimming off of one of the lake’s beaches, or if he’d rather be on the water there are boat, kayak and SUP rentals. The Oasis is a great spot to grab lunch and enjoy the lake life view.

10. Outdoor Father’s Day FOR THE HOMEBODY

Nothing says “Happy Father’s Day” like a backyard BBQ. Firing up the grill and spending quality time together would be the perfect gift for the Dad who just loves to chill. Invite some of his best buds over and it will sure be a great afternoon celebrating the Dad in your life.

Whatever you plan, just know Dad is one lucky guy to have you in his life. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

Leigh Weitzen
After spending most of her life in the greater New York City area, almost seven years ago, Leigh moved to Austin with the love of her life, Justin, to embark on a new adventure. As a former marketing project manager now turned stay-at-home mom, Leigh enjoys exploring new places with her daughter Hazel (July 2019) and eating her way through the ATX vegan scene. Prior to the pandemic, Leigh ran the food blog @aroundtownvegan, where she promoted how easy it is to eat vegan at restaurants around Austin. After spending most of her days venturing to new playgrounds with her daughter, and spending less time eating out, she shifted gears from the foodie scene by recently launching @austinplaygrounds. When she’s not busy trying to squeeze down the ridiculously tall slides the newer playgrounds have to offer, you can find her hiking with her family and loveable dog, Juno, testing out new vegan + gluten-free dessert recipes, and prepping for baby #2 on the way in September.
