By now, we’ve all heard that washing hands, social distancing, and wearing a mask will reduce the spread of COVID-19. But what are we doing to strengthen our ‘inner mask’? –The ‘mask’ we wear on the inside, our body’s natural defense mechanism: the immune system and how can we incorporate natural immune system boosters?
We keep seeing new treatments doctors are using to treat patients once they are already sick & hospitalized, but what about proactive care? COVID (and this new strain) are wildly contagious, so I’m dealing with all my pandemic-induced anxiety by ramping up a strong offense. That way, when/if I become exposed to the virus, I have a strong body that’s better equipped to fight the nasty bugger off.
First, let’s go over the basics: eat clean, reduce stress and get outside. Nature is the BEST stress-reliever — free & available to us all! Especially here in Texas, we’ve got lots of sunshine & fresh air and plenty of wide-open spaces to socially-distance. There’s ongoing research which shows a link between those with a Vitamin D deficiency having an increased severity of COVID. Nature’s most abundant source of Vitamin D is the sun. It’s ironic that in some areas of the country & the world, people are being told to do the exact opposite: to stay indoors & don’t leave home.
Next, a shout-out to the immune-boosting vitamin we all know of: Vitamin C. But, upping Zinc and the aforementioned Vitamin D are great, too. Other tactics: staying hydrated (a big glass of water first thing in the morning!), getting adequate sleep, and moderate exercise. Look, we are all hopeful the vaccine will bring us some respite soon, but even with the vaccine in play, never has there been a more important time to look at one’s health routine and make changes to how they live daily. Here are some of my favorite ways to stay healthy & boost my immune system:
