Austin Dads Blog, Father's Day

{We are 2 days out from Father’s Day 2014 and to honor the men in our lives, we are turning over the blogging reins to some pretty special dads this week. Check out all of our dads this week as they share their joys, regrets, and journeys to fatherhood with Austin Dads Blog.}

Now that we are nearing the end of our Austin Dads Blog Series, I am beginning to realize that I know a lot of fabulous fathers! And Shane Farrar is no exception! As a stay at home Dad, I can honestly say that this is one unicorn I HAVE seen in action and he’s pretty awesome. My sister’s BFF and my neighbor, here’s Shane!

As a stay at home Dad to our 3 year old daughter, Father’s Day is a very special day for me. There are a lot of misconceptions about being a stay at home dad, but today I’d like to share some of my proudest achievements, observations and some funny things I’ve learned over the past 3 years.

  • Austin Moms Blog, Reflections of a Stay at Home Dad
  • I work 50 hours a week, without an hour lunch break, sick days or time off for a vacation
  • Rarely do I ever sit down, unless it’s for an impromptu tea party or check up at Doc McStuffin’s office (I bet you didn’t realize that Doc’s dad is also a stay at home dad)
  • I have put more mileage on my car taking my daughter to appointments and classes than I ever did working full-time
  • Milk and lollipops resolve 99% of all meltdowns
  • I have a greater appreciation for the Disney channel & Disney radio
  • Stay at Home Dads are like unicorns – when I tell people I am a Stay at Home Dad, most often people respond by telling me that they know one, but I’ve yet to ever meet or see one
  • You don’t have to work 80 hours a week, drive a ridiculously expensive sports car or wear $500 suits every day to be an active contributing member of society
  • I am a college graduate, a Navy veteran of Desert Storm & worked over 15 years in the high tech industry before choosing to become the primary caregiver of our daughter
  • I’ve only been on the job 3 years, but I have had many significant achievements:
  • Made my daughter laugh for the first time
  • Taught my daughter how to feed herself
  • Taught my daughter to cruise
  • Taught my daughter to crawl up the stairs
  • Taught my daughter to count to 10
  • Taught my daughter unconditional love for animals
  • Taught my daughter to love & appreciate nature
  • I don’t know what I’ll do when our daughter starts pre-school soon other than miss her like crazy and count down the hours until it’s time for me to go pick her up!

So next time you meet a stay at home dad, shake his hand & appreciate him a little bit more!
