About a month or so ago I decided to get my money saving pants on and try a new DIY project. I already make my own laundry detergent, baby wipes, and dishwasher detergent so it only made sense to start doing my own dryer sheets! There’s at least a dozen different methods for DIY fabric softener and dryer sheets, but here’s the one I’ve been successfully using for a couple of months that’s SO worth it and SUPER easy!!!

What you need

Scotch Sponges: the ones without the scrub part—literally just a sponge

Liquid Fabric Softener: I use Downy

Empty Baby Wipes Container:

What you do

Cut the Scotch sponges in ½

Pour your fabric softener in your empty baby wipes container (about 1/3 of the way full)

When you get ready to dry your clothes, wring out 2-3 sponge halves (this is important so you don’t get drippage {new word alert!} on your clothes), throw in the dryer with your clothes, and wipe your hands off!

That’s it!

Since using my own laundry detergent I have noticed that my clothes have very little scent so I use DIY dryer sheets to a. soften my clothes and b. help them smell like fresh laundry! Sometimes I put white vinegar in the rinse portion of my HE washing machine, which helps as well.

The beauty of this DIY is the sponges should last for a very long time and I’m definitely not using near as much liquid fabric softener that I would if I was putting it directly in the washing machine. I anticipate that less than $7 I spent will last me at least 1 ½ years, if not longer! And next time all I have to buy is the fabric softener, because the sponges should last! I’m definitely saving money and this is one DIY I wil continue to do!

If you try it out, let me know how it works for you!
