Forget Cinco de Drinko— for a lot of horse-crazy folks out there, this weekend was all about Derby Day!

Well if the big race got you pining for a pony or hoping for some horsey time, then you’re in luck . . . This week, Austin Moms Blog is giving away a FREE one-hour private riding lesson

Erin Givens (left), owner and trainer at Sterling Hunter Jumpers-- and an Austin Mama!

at Sterling Hunter Jumpers! This lesson can be given to whichever equine enthusiast you have in your family: your wannabe cowboy husband (he wears boots, but has he ever actually been on a horse??), your  animal-lover son, your little cowgirl, or heck, keep it for yourself! Fulfill a lifelong dream, or just get back in the saddle to enjoy an hour without the kids. After all, you can’t be true Texan without spending some time astride a trusty steed . . . And did we mention it’s one hell of a thigh workout??

Sterling Hunter Jumpers is owned by an Austin Mom named Erin Givens that Jessica swears is the best instructor around (she must be, she coaches the Texas State University equestrian team!). With its top-notch facilities, horses, and instruction, it is an equestrian oasis that was just awarded a United States Pony Club designation (a huge honor).

So lace up your boots and get ready to ride! Oh, unless you are actually a super sweet mom and give it to someone else. 🙂 Here’s how to enter: comment below with your (or your kiddo’s) favorite horse story, movie, or character!! It’s that easy! You have until Saturday at noon to enter, and we will announce the randomly-drawn winner on Sunday.

And if you do keep the lesson for yourself, you can always send your kiddo (ages 6-16) to something even better: a one week horsemanship camp! Sterling Hunter Jumpers is offering a 50% off horsemanship camp deal on Living Social this week . . . Check it out!

  1. Well I know I can’t win but gotta shout out to Misty of chincoteague! If I spelled that right… 🙂

    • I read all of the Misty books too…loved them but nothing like the Black Stallion.

    • Lol– reminds me of some horses I’ve had the “pleasure” of riding– I guess the feeling wasn’t reciprocated. 🙂 Don’t worry, Sterling has great schooling horses! And no clotheslines in the arenas…

  2. I love horses and I wish I had more time to ride. When I was little I went to horse camp. I was so shy and had a hard time making friends since I was the youngest one. But there was this older retired man who helped take care of the horses. He was so nice to me and ate lunch with me every day. He also introduced me to his favorite horse “bubbles”. I ended riding bubbles for the end of camp competition. I will always remember that camp thanks to the old man and Bubbles 🙂

  3. My favorite book was The Black Stallion …saw the movie when it came out too. The horse was exactly what I imagined when I read the book as a young girl.  I always wanted a horse but all I ever got were little stuffed ones.  In Corpus Christi we would go to the local stables where we thought we were real riders…the horses were so tired they just walked the same old trails on about an acre of land.  When my daughter was about 16 she took English riding classes and it was so much fun to be around the horses. They are the most amazing animals.  Good luck to me!!
