AMB Food TrucksIf  you have never eaten food from a food truck (or trailer), then you are missing out.  It seems you can’t drive anywhere without seeing a random food truck on the side of the road — or several food trucks all in a row.  There are quite literally, hundreds of them all over Austin — but I have a few favorites that you simply *must* try.  Keep in mind — just because you are getting food from a trailer, it doesn’t mean it’s cheap, quick and gross.  Some of the best food I’ve eaten has come from a trailer!

1). Gourdoughs.  Let’s start with breakfast, shall we?  Gourdoughs is known for it’s Big.Fat.Donuts.   Like donuts?  You must go here this weekend.  No.  Seriously.  They.Are.Awesome.  And filling.  And oh so good.   They are located in an air stream off of south lamar and these donuts are worth the wait!  You order and they make your donut while you wait — so, it comes out hot and perfectly yummy.    They are around $6 each — but you can easily split one!

2).  The Peached Tortilla.     They are an actual truck that drives from location to location.   They have two trucks that you can track around town to have lunch.   And they cater — so, if you’re having a party, they will come to you.  All their sauces are homemade and they believe that you live to eat — so they want you to love what you are eating!  They describe their food as simple Southern comfort food with an Asian flair .   You can get tacos and burgers and well, it makes for a perfect snack or lunch.

3).  Dock and Roll Diner.  Another lovely airstream located off South First — and they are known for their lobster roll ($13).   Don’t worry — if you aren’t a fan of lobster, there are plenty of other sandwiches you’ll love.

4)  Via 313.  Pizza anyone?  Yes.  I think so!  Do you love fresh made dough and lots of cheese?  And partying on sixth street?  Okay — maybe not that last part, heck, I can’t even stay up past nine o’clock most nights.  But you can find them on 6th and on Rainey Street (which is now the cool place to go instead of 4th street for those of you who are in my age group).

5).  Flip Happy Crepes.  They were my first ever food truck experience — the wait was looooong but OH so worth it.   These  handmade crepes are served from a lovely little airstream.  They have savory (roasted chicken w/ carmelized onions, garlic aioli and goat cheese) and sweet (whipped peanut butter w/ dark chocolate sauce, bananas and almonds) and you might as well get both because you don’t want to stand in line again.  They are currently trying to find a new spot … so, stay tuned!    But my list wouldn’t be complete without them!

What are your favorite food trailers?  I’d love to experience more and eat my way through Austin!
