With our Best Baby Name in Austin Contest going on, I thought it would be interesting to get YOUR opinion on some information I read last week.  I’ve talked about Huffington Post before and this is another article I got from there.  If you’re not an HP regular, I strongly encourage you to download their app or check out their site.  They post all sorts of articles about every topic under the sun, not just mommy things!

Moving on, the article I read was: “Bad Baby Name Leads To Insecurity, Less Education, More Smoking”

According to European research, a bad name can lead to lower self-esteem, fewer relationship opportunities, higher likelihood of smoking and less education later in life.  The survey questioned more than 12,000 people and was hosted by an online dating service, eDarling.

Of the surveyed participants, most would rather remain single than date someone with an unappealing name.  Interesting huh? They determined this because participants were asked to pick a prospective date based on identical interests and the only difference was the name.  Ex: Name: Bladida Hobbies: Love Dogs Hair: Brown  vs. Name: Elizabeth Hobbies: Love Dogs Hair: Brown.

Did you think about things like that when naming your kid?  Did you think about their dating future or their future career aspirations?  If you could re-name your kid, would you?

  1. Interesting… We tried to pick a name that wasn’t too common “meaning top 10 most popular names”. At the same time we didn’t want something too crazy where he might get made fun of. I wouldn’t change Lincoln’s name for anything and we get so many compliments on it!
